Numb3rs - Part 2

Cost to Warehouse.

There are a number of approaches to calculating your proffit. With a business that buys wholesale and sells retail on the web one of the most usefill is calculating the cost to warehouse figure, then calculate the proffit from that.

The more basic steps are covered in the previous post here.

Let's extend our example now and work out the profit for two products bought from the same supplier:

Numb3rs - Calculation Profit

The more I work with small e-commerce businesses, the more I see the foundations of business being missed or forgotten. Granted, it is easy theses days to pop your creditcard in on a website, and 10 minutes later, have a fully working e-shop, but as a shop owner knowing the profit you make on each item is just of paramount importance, knowing your fixed overheads, even knowing your competitors rates and shipping.

You should get Google base working for your cart

Google base is the back-end system that provides data to Google's shopping search engine. Google shopping is the pages that show when you press the shopping link directly on the Google search results page. In the same way Google show a selection of picture results in search results, if you search for a product, Google also show the top entries from their shopping site in their main results.

Gaining ground

We have been building up followers over the past few weeks and getting feedback from readers. We hear you are wanting a bit more depth to some of the posts, and detail how to implement some of the things we are talking about. We have noticed some of the questions are coming from cart develpers rather than just cart owners. We are thinking about some pages around how the differenmt carts and solutions work for developers and re-sellers too, but will keep that out of the way for the cart owners amongst you.

Adding shops to twitter account

I have spent the evening adding shop owners to our twitter account. The more we get into this project, the more and more we are aiming to understand the e commerce space. What better a way than to read the daily tweets of shop owners.

When we get a pattern of things we will aim to address the biggest questions of you!! Anything jumps out, let us know!

Some real insight

Starting a web cart is a very easy thing to do. a quick google and a few clicks later you can have a live site.

the more time I spend in this space, the more I find out there are layers upon layers of information that can help the average shop owner do that little better, then a little better, and a little more..

this slide pack ( http://www.bazaarvoice.com/theconversationindex ) gives a set of thoughts data and facts that will just help tweak your thoughts.. maybe give you a different angle to thik about.

I love open source... But

I cant stress how much of an open source advecate I am.. but a harsh reality of open source is stressed over and over to me.. I am confident I will write somthing more on this over the comming weks, but here is an article on another e-commerce site saying the same thing..

biggest-mistakes-in-web-design

A big area in e-commerce for me is the art of web usability. I know I will refer time and time again to usability, and some of the key players in that space. but as a starter for ten, I'll point you at a generic web design site.. its a bit of fun, but will get you thinking about your own cart.

Infact this is a good start for us to start building a checklist of things to think about. I'm not saying these are going to be the be all and end all, but a list of things to think about seems like a good start.

All linked together and avalable everywhere!
